Love Island finished with Ekin Su and Davide being voted as the winners. But what exactly is it and why do Gen Z love it so much?

Love Island is a reality dating show where 10 people are sent to a Villa in Majorca to find love (or brand deals). It lasts for 8 weeks and contestants will couple up with each other and recouple up in order to find a genuine connection. If two people are lucky enough to find a connection and win the public’s vote then they could win the £50,000 jackpot.

There are three main reasons why I believe Gen Z love the show so much

The first reason Gen Z loves the show so much is because of the Drama that the contestants face , whether it's a contestant sneaking off on a balcony with a man outside of her couple and being called an actress and a liar or a dramatic recoupling. Every single year the show gives us cringe and jaw dropping moments that have you glued to your screen. This Drama often turns into think pieces with many viewers magically turning to psychologists giving their psychological breakdowns of each character and how they reacted to certain situations.

Not only is this highly entertaining but it gives birth to an abundance of laughter for thousands due to the jokes generated from social media.

The second reason Gen Z loves the show so much is due to the viral jokes on Twitter and Instagram. Many viewers of the show will watch it with Twitter in hand just so they can see the jokes in real time. Bringing joy and laughter, these jokes can often be repeated at school, university or work to make you look funnier than you actually are and can help Gen Z bond with each other to a higher level. Being aware of these jokes allows Gen Z to be a part of something bigger than themselves, giving them a feeling of being part of a wider community.

Thirdly Gen Z Love Island due to fear of missing out. Partaking in the latest trends is integral to being young and growing up. Those who do not watch love island miss out on many of the conversations that take place, discussing the show, the drama the night before or the viral jokes on the internet. Love Island has also become a huge part of British pop culture, contestants upon arriving on the show gain a massive following on Instagram and Twitter and upon leaving the show are flooded with brand deals.

It may come as a bit of a surprise that Gen Z enjoy Love Island so much as the show has come under a lot of criticism due to the unrealistic body types, the lack of diversity and the misogyny shown by some contestants. This may seem counterintuitive for Gen Z ( a group of people who are socially aware and active) to form such a huge part of the Love Island fanbase but perhaps the reasons mentioned earlier trump their moral contradictions.
