The parameters for children’s safety online are changing, and in this month’s trend debrief, we dig into what this looks like and why it matters.

Earlier this autumn, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act, which is the first American state statute that installs a broad range of safeguards on online services aimed at users under 18. It follows the UK’s own Age Appropriate Design Code, which came into effect in 2021. We see this as part of a broader trend: as there is increasing recognition of the need to create a safer internet for the (near) constantly-connected kids of 2022 and beyond.
